Slayer

Slayer (ang. zabójca) – amerykańska grupa muzyczna wykonująca thrash metal powstała 1981 roku w Huntington Park, przedmiściach Los Angeles. Zespół powstał z inicjatywy gitarzysty Kerry'ego Kinga, który do współpracy zaprosił gitarzytę Jeffa Hannemana, pochodzącego z Kuby perkusistę Davea Lombardo oraz basistę i wokalistę Chilijczyka Tom Araya. Już w początkowym okresie działalności muzycy rozwinęli własny styl oparty na intensywnych partiach gitar z partiami solowymi wykonywanymi przy użyciu podwójnie blokowanych mostków gitarowych oraz charakterystyczny śpiew wokalisty zespołu. W początkowym okresie działalności zespół grał covery utworów Iron Maiden, Judas Priest oraz zespołów punkrockowych. 25 marca 1982 roku w Southgate Highschool w Los Angeles zespół dał swój pierwszy koncert.

Cztery z dziesięciu albumów grupy zyskały stastus złotej płyty. Wieloletnim współpracownikiem grupy był producent muzyczny Rick Rubin współpracujący również z takimi grupami jak Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Metallica czy System of a Down.

Slayer wraz z grupami Metallica, Anthrax i Megadeth zaliczany jest do tzw. "Wielkiej Czwórki" thrash metalu, wywierając wpływ i inspiracje dla przyszłych wykonawców nurtu takich jak Chimaira, Mnemic czy Vader.

27 sierpnia 1983 w Los Angeles podczas koncertu w klubie Woodstock na zespół zwrócił uwagę Brian Slagel właściciel wytwórni muzycznej Metal Blade Records gdy ta wykonywała utwór "Phantom of the Opera" z repertuaru grupy Iron Maiden. Slagel wkrótce zaproponował im nagranie utworu na kompilację Metal Massacre 3 na której ukazał się utwór Aggressive Perfector. W listopadzie tego samego roku grupa rozpoczeła relizację debiutanckiego albumu pt. Show No Mercy wydanego w grudniu 1983 roku nakładem Metal Blade Records w USA oraz początkiem 1984 w Europie. Album został wyprodukowany przez Briana Slagela, koszty nagrań pokrył natomiast sam zespół z środków, które zgromadził basista Tom Araya pracując jako terapeuta w miejskim szpitalu oraz pożyczki udzielonej przez ojca gitarzysty Kerryego Kinga. Zaraz po nagraniu albumu wynajętym vanem oraz samochodem Camaro należącym do basisty Araya, zespół wyruszył w swoją pierwszą trasę koncertową No Mercy Tour. Pieniądze uzyskane z koncertów pozowliły jedynie na jej kontynuację, m.in. zakup żwyności.

Slayer powstał w 1981 roku z inicjatywy Kerry'ego Kinga, w Huntington Park, Los Angeles. Nie był to jego pierwszy zespół, Kerry grał wcześniej w innej kapeli razem z Tom'em Araya którego podobno wyrzucił z tej kapelki, ponieważ nie potrafił nawet dobrze gitary basowej trzymać. Kerry, kiedy zakładał Slayer zaproponował mu dołączenie do nowego zespołu. Tom jednak miał wtedy pełne ręce roboty, pracował w szpitalu. Więc pierwszym muzykiem który dołączył do grupy obok Kerry'ego Kinga był gitarzysta Jeff Hanneman, który tak jak Dave Lombardo mieszkał niedaleko Kerry'ego.

Niedługo potem po spotkaniu z Kerrym do grupy dołączył także perkusista Dave Lombardo. Pozostał problem wokalno/bassowy, więc Kerry skontaktował się z Tomem który tym razem przyjął propozycję nowego zespołu. Po skompletowaniu składu, przyszedł czas na nazwanie kapeli. Początkowo miał być to Dragonslayer, dopiero potem zmienili nazwę na Slayer. Na pierwszych koncertach Slayer grał covery Judas Priest, Iron Maiden oraz kilku punkowych kapel. Pierwszy koncert odbył się 25 Marca 1982 roku w "Sounth Gate High School" (wtedy ich szkole).

W 1983 roku po koncercie w lokalnym klubie "Woodstock" Brian Slagel, szef wytwórni Metal Blade który obserwował wtedy występ. Zaproponował im nagranie kawałka na płytę kompilacyjną "Metal Massacre III". Na składance znalazł się utwór "Aggressive Perfector". Do tego Brian Slagel pomógł w wydaniu ich pierwszej debiutanckiej płyty. W 1983 Slayer nagrywa swój debiutancki album "Show No Mercy". Album wydany w grudniu 1983 roku pod szyldem "Metal Blade Records" zawierał 10 utworów, trwał 35 minut. Debiut okazał się dużym sukcesem, do dzisiaj uznawanym za klasykę thrash metalu. Zabójcza szybkość, świetna perkusja oraz legendarne już gitarowe solówki. Pierwsza trasa w Stanach Zjednoczonych okazała się także wielkim sukcesem. Zespół w czasie trasy był zmuszony często spać u "życzliwych ludzi", a wszystkie pieniądze z koncertów wydawali na jedzenie i piwo. Gdy wrócili z trasy Brian Slagel zadał im pytanie "Gdzie są moje pieniądze?". W 1984 roku Slayer nagrał EP-ke "Haunting the Chapel" na której znalazły się nowe kawałki "Chemical Warfare", "Captor of Sin" oraz tytułowy. 

Slayer is an American thrash metal band founded by guitarists Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King in 1981. Slayer rose to fame as one of the leaders of the American thrash metal movement with their 1986 release, Reign in Blood, which has been called "the heaviest album of all time" by Kerrang!. The band is credited as one of the "Big Four" thrash metal bands, along with Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth.

Slayer is known for its musical traits, involving fast tremolo picking, guitar solos, double bass drumming, and shouting vocals. The band's lyrics and album art, which cover topics such as death, deviants, genocide, necrophillia, insanity, religion, Satanism, serial killers, and warfare have generated album bans, delays, lawsuits and strong criticism from religious groups and the general public.

Since its debut record in 1983, the band has released two live albums, one cover album, one box set, three DVDs, one VHS, two EPs, and nine studio albums, four of which have received gold certification in the United States. The band has received three Grammy nominations, winning one in 2007 for the song "Eyes of the Insane", and one in 2008 for the song "Final Six". They have headlined music festivals worldwide, including Ozzfest and The Unholy Alliance.

Without a recording budget, the band was forced to self-finance its debut album. Combining the savings of Araya, who was employed as a respiratory therapist, and money borrowed from King's father, the band entered the studio in November 1983. The album was rushed into release, hitting shelves three weeks after tracks were completed. Show No Mercy, released in December 1983 by Metal Blade Records, generated underground popularity for the band, and they began their first national club tour in 1984 to promote the album traveling in Araya's Camaro towing a U-Haul trailer. The tour gave the band additional popularity; sales of Show No Mercy reached more than 20,000 in the US and another 20,000 worldwide.

In August 1984, Slayer released a three song EP titled Haunting the Chapel. The EP featured a darker, more thrash-oriented style than its predecessor, and laid the groundwork for the future direction of the band. The opening track, "Chemical Warfare," has become a live staple, played at nearly every show since 1984. After the release of Haunting the Chapel, Slayer made its live European debut at the Heavy Sounds Festival in Belgium opening for UFO, returning to the US to begin the Haunting The West Coast tour.

Following the tour, King temporarily left Slayer to join Dave Mustaine's new band Megadeth. Hanneman was worried about King's decision, stating in an interview "I guess we’re gonna get a new guitar player." While Mustaine wanted King to stay on a permanent basis, King rejoined Slayer after five shows, stating Megadeth was "taking too much of my time." The split caused a rift between King and Mustaine, which evolved into a long running feud between the two bands. Following King's return, the band embarked on the 1984 Combat Tour, with Venom and Exodus, and released a live album titled Live Undead in November.
